Wanda was 14 when she married Jehiel Crites, 18. She was too young, so they lied about their ages on the marriage license. Seventy years later, their nine children had grown their family to eleven grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

We wanted to be together and my folks wouldn’t let me because they said we were getting too serious.

He was getting someone to make a date with me, and I would go off and he’d be waiting for me.

The marriage license says he was 21 and I was 18. That was the first lie we started off with.

My only words of advice are to just try and get along and that’s what we’ve done. We’re looking after each other.
